Personal locator devices are becoming more and more popular as the price comes down under USD 100. In California, it may be getting out of hand as false alarms or non-emergency situations are sending helicopters in to rescue mode. In the sailing world, GPS locators and emergency radios have been around much longer with many fewer false alarms. Possibly that is because of the heavy fines for false alarms or private response teams before the government rescue teams are called. I assume it is about time the personal locator devices go the same direction. While, GPS rescue devices are a great addition to saving lives, now that nearly every adventurer has one, it might be time to tighten up on how they are used and what type of rescue response they bring.
